Take collections to the next level

Oklahoma State University Medical Center improves performance, cash flow

OSUMC achieves estimate accuracy within 98 percent of final bill and more

OSUMC struggled with accuracy of estimates, point-of-service collections, compliance and more. They automated contract management but still needed to update patient access, charge integrity, and recovery and collections. These improvements enabled them to reorganize their preregistration and billing processes, automate patient bill estimates and eligibility verification, and train staff to ask for copays. Charge data master updates ensured accurate pricing and product utilization. New processes improved coordination and reporting between functions. Today, estimate accuracy is within 98 percent of the final bill, and point-of-service (POS) cash collections are up seven-fold. Upgraded charge integrity reporting has reduced missing items by 19 percent. Better contract management has identified more than $5.9 million in payor underpayments over a two-year period.

Recognized value:

  • Patient-friendly estimates within 98 percent of final bill
  • Seven-fold increase in point-of-service collections
  • 19 percent reduction in missed charges
  • $5.9 million in underpayments over two years
  • Staff trained to discuss patient responsibility prior to care
